The federal government has approved the transfer of N20,000 to 3,500 rural women in 20 local government areas of Ogun State.

The approval was given on Saturday, January 31.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq said the grant was designed “to give a lifting hand to some of the poorest and most vulnerable citizens.”

The minister noted that poverty reduction is a goal of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, adding that amelioration efforts have been channelled towards the poorest and most vulnerable citizens.

Sadiya said since the introduction of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), 12 million households have benefitted.

“Poverty reduction has become a major objective of governments all over the world. This informed the president’s decision to initiate the NSIP as a strategy for poverty reduction and enhancement of social inclusion.”

Recall that the federal government had earlier announced that 24 million poor Nigerians would be given N5,000 each for a period of six months as part of the current administration’s efforts to take people out of poverty and extreme want.

The disclosure was made on Tuesday, January 19, by Farouq.

Shedding light on the development in Abuja via a statement through her aide Nneka Anibeze, Farouq, said the program was designed to rapidly identify, register and provide succour to people who were not previously captured in the social register.
