Catholic Praise Concert

Musicians of different genres gathered recently in Lagos for the third edition of Catholic Praise Concert.

The event, which held at St. Leo Catholic Church, Ikeja, Lagos; was a harvest of Classical, Afrobeat, Contemporary, Highlife and Fuji music.

Trust the choirs that graced the 2017 Catholic Praise Concert , the ‘congregation’ had full dose of classical music that issued from both male and mixed voices, in local and foreign languages. St. Charles Lwanga Choir of Ikeja performed three choral pieces, ‘Osenobua’ (Edo), ‘K’anyi kene Chineke’ (Igbo) and ‘Send your blessing Oh Lord’. St. Cecilia Choir of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, University of Lagos (UNILAG), and St. Augustine Choir of St. Leo also performed choral pieces like ‘Ezozo’ composed by Kingsley Odia et al for Forum for the Inculturation of Liturgical Music (FILM).

There was Afrobeat for the ‘Sanctus’ during the opening Mass officiated by Msgr. John Aniagwu. Fada Fuji had time to entertain guests, as Jesus Baby also brought her talking drum style of worship to the concert.

Those who thought a Catholic concert would be characterised by solemn music were shocked when Kelar Thrillz came on stage full of energy. Their acrobatic stunts to the beat of Egwu eji jolted some of the participants that had started dozing off at the all-night show.

The organisers, led by Peter Egbumokei went as far as Turkey to invite a Nigerian violinist, Daniel Azuka (a.k.a. A-Strings), who performed with 13-year-old David Aduragbemi from 2013 Nigeria’s Got Talent (NGT).

Aside Fada Fuji, Rev. Fr. Tony-Maria Boluwaji and Rev. Ss Lucy, also gave good account of themselves musically at the Catholic Praise Concert. Joe Praize from Christ Embassy did not disappoint. So was Kenny Kore, formally of Infinity Group. Tessy Aniesi performed gospel reggae. Desmond Man of Praise, Psalmos, Great CYON led by Grace Bernard, Victus and friends from UNILAG, Harmonic Syndrome, Clenz, Emmanuel and his group from St. Leo, Chikamji, Hillary George and the SOTM Crew, St. Leo Charismatic Band, and Nonso. CPC is a one-day gospel music concert of praise offering to God for Christians.
