These are not the best of times for Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Femi Hamzat, one of the contenders for All Progressive Congress (APC), governorship ticket in Lagos State.
The son of veteran politician Alhaji Baba Hamzat, former National Vice-Chairman of Alliance for Democracy (AD), and the current Apex Leader APC Lagos West Senatorial District is currently enmeshed in a messy controversy that has to do with his questionable lavishing of monies accruable to his office.
www.theoctopusnews.com, learnt that Dr. Hamzat’s ministry controls most of the Lagos State’s N23B monthly IGR via projects such as roads, schools and all sorts of construction contracts. We also learnt that due to his connivance with some top people in the government of the day his excesses are been over looked.
Besides being fixated with the office of the governor, the man; is said to be so desperate to become the next Governor of Lagos State that he has been throwing money around and dashing millions to anybody who calls himself a party stalwart in the state or who he feels has control over the hierarchy of the party.
In the last two months, Dr. Hamzat is alleged to have splashed nearly N10B in various forms to individuals and groups for their supports of his political ambition.
The Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu was said to have been shell-shocked when Dr. Hamzat allegedly gave him $250,000 (about N40m) that he told a person privy to the gift that “so people make this kind of money in Lagos government?”
Other alleged beneficiaries of the Lagos Works Commissioner’s largess are the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Salaudeen Oyefusi, the Alara of Ilaara, Oba Akeem Adesanya, the Akran of Badagry and the Olu of Ikeja Land who allegedly got $50,000 (about N4m) each.
Impeccable sources told us that Dr. Femi recently bought a house in Epe, where he stayed while courting the support of the Arolugbade Epele 11, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, one of the two Obas in Epe.
He allegedly gave a N350M contract in Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to the Oba.
As for some APC leader such as Alhaji Mutiu Are, he allegedly got a N300m contract in the same ministry. About two months ago during the Muslim fasting, it was alleged that the N2.5M, Dr. Hamzat gave some Imams in NITEL Area in Mushin tore the clerics apart as they fought themselves over the sharing formula.
Efforts made by our reporter to speak to the commissioner on the bribery allegation were futile as he did not respond to requests for comment sent to his MTN phone.
