One syndrome which is fast becoming popular with Nigerian artistes is the boycott of paid shows.

In recent times, a crop of new generation musicians from Davido to Yemi Alade, Flavour among others have walked this part leaving many wondering why.

Sometimes back, it was rumoured that such attitude was one of the reasons Flavour lost his deal with his former label, as each time they tell him to go and perform at an event having been paid, he ends up not showing up there.

Aside Flavour, Yemi Alade is one singer who recently did not show up for a paid show. The Johnny crooner was suppose to headline a concert in Tropical Bar, Berlin, Germany, but failed to make it to the show on time. She subsequently took to the social media to apologize to her fans for her actions saying the promoters of the show were responsible for what happened, as she promised to entertain them some other time.

If Yemi Alade’s display is attributed to the fault of the promoters, perhaps, Oritsefemi’s actions would be considered shocking.

Having agreed a performance fee for a concert in Europe packaged by an events and artiste management outfit owned by Alex Ozone, the artiste performed the first show, but absconded from his hotel room in Czech Republic without fulfilling his contractual obligations to 03 media and Urban Entertainment who formed a partnership to organize the event.

Years back, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) boss, Bankole Wellington popular as Banky W announced that he would not be present at the Goodluck Jonathan concert scheduled to hold on Friday, March 25, 2011 in Abuja. Banky took to his Twitter account on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 to inform his followers that he would be committing himself to the ‘What About Us’ cause; a movement formed by respected youths to engage on public platforms, men and women aspiring to occupy government offices come April 2011 on their plans for the Nigerian youth.

While Banky W might have been fighting for a justified course, same cannot be said of a lot of other artistes who have boycotted shows.

This new trend among artistes has left a lot of questions in its wake, as many are pondering if musicians are getting greedy by the day or if the problem lies with show promoters.
