Victoria Kimani is the First Lady of Chocolate City Record label and a sexy goddess. In this interview with Our REPORTER, she talks about her music and fashion.

You could have chosen to be in any industry, why did you opt to be a musician?

There were other things I could have, but the truth is that I couldn’t do anything that didn’t come from my heart. I was inspired by a book I read. I remembered after reading the book I stepped out in a red jacket with a cut all the way down, a red bra and everything was showing, but I didn’t care. For me, it was like I woke and this is how I feel, this is what I feel like wearing.

At what age did you decide to take music serious?

I moved to Los Angeles when I was about 18 years-old. I started writing songs and I wrote for a bunch of artiste. Few years later I moved back to Africa to do music.

What was your first ever song like?

I started recording and travelling as a back-up singer in Kenya.  My first publishing deal came as a songwriter and I wrote my first song when I was 16 years-old. Although it was very depressing, I liked it. It ended up been the beginning of something interesting for me because to be able to write down my feeling and record them in a studio and hear what it sounded like was a big deal for me.

In what genre would you place your kind of music?

I don’t have a particular genre. I don’t like being stereotyped or boxed in. I can do R&B songs, Reggae, afro-pop or hip-hop song. Those are the kind of music that I can do.

What inspires your songs?

My inspiration comes from my day-to-day life.

Can you compare your kind of music to what you hear when you are in Nigeria?

My music is very different from the Nigerian kind, but the great thing is people can separate good music from bad music. So far, my releases have been doing great. Some people will love my music, while others won’t.

What was working with Techno Miles like?

It was lovely. He produced my song titled ***Show***. The song hit the airwaves late last year. It was more of a fashion video. I was styled by a stylist called Boogie. I like working with African designers. Creativity and fashion is always what my video is all about. I am not going to do a video without a fashion statement.

What does fashion and style mean to you?

Fashion and style means identity, it is an expression of who you are and how you feel. My style is very sporadic, I have no formula; I just dress how I feel. I express my felling via my wardrobe, despite any current trends.  Mostly, I would describe my fashion as edgy, and funky, as long as it looks good and a lot of people are not wearing it.

It can change every day  because I am not hook with it and it is not like a boyfriend that you have to keep around. It is something that you can use to express how you feel on a day and the next day you are changed. You can fix it up. For me, it is just about the individual.

Would it be right to consider you a label freak?

I have never been a label whore. If someone creates something good I can rock it.

You have this addiction for wearing clinging dresses why?

It is all about comfort. I feel most comfortable in a pair of sexy Jeans. There is nothing as worse as being a curvy woman like myself and not having stretch trousers to wear. I also like Jeans because it just gets everything ready for me. My music sound different and I like my fashion to look different.

Would you describe yourself as a star?

I won’t say that I am famous. It is the hard work which I have to do in order to get to where I want to be that I see ahead.

Besides music what do you do?

I work out; watch very little Television, cracking jokes with my brothers. It seems like I’m always working. I’m really into fashion and cosmetics, so I’m always looking at magazines, or trying on makeup and experimenting with different looks. In my spare time, I design clothes that I end up wearing for my photo shoots and videos. I’m always thinking of how to be iconic and take the African pop image higher than what it is. I also spend a lot of time online, studying music artistes such as Brenda Fassie, Beyonce and Bob Marley.

What is your typical day like?

I workout, go for interview sessions and go to shows if I have any and relax with my family. However, while I am chilling I am also working.
