Years before his life was cut short in its prime, via the ill-fated Associated Airline plane which crashed on Thursday, October 3, in Lagos State, late Tunji Okunsanya snr, boss of MIC Funeral Home, one of the most popular names in his industry had been quoted as saying that he is not scared of death because everybody would die someday. He however wanted to be buried immediate when he dies.”
This statement, from a man who did not want too much frenzy after his demise could not stop his friends and some family members who gathered with teary eyes at his office located on Odunlami Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State, on Friday, October 4, as some grieved uncontrollably, while others paid their respect to the man who died alongside his son, Tunji jnr.
Apart from members of the man’s family, employees of MIC Funeral Home numbering over 20, defied the rain, as they gathered in clusters discussing the incident with some recounting how Okusanya picked them off the street and turned their lives around.
Neighbours and business associates who could not believe the story of the man’s demise came to his office to confirm the death, as one of the them was heard lamenting that God should bring both father and son back, as their jobs on earth was yet
to be completed.
At 8:45 AM, a lighted candle burnt beside a picture of both father and son placed on a stool, while a radio set played a sorrowful tune. By 10 AM, the condolence register opened at the office had 23 names with popular personalities conspicuously missing in it.
Names such as Akeem Akintunde, Funke Adesoji were spotted on the list even as staffers of the funeral house admonished sympathizers not to block the view of passerby who were stopping over to sign the condolsence register.
Efforts made by our reporters to speak with family members and staffers of the deceased proved abortive, as a man who simply identified himself simply as Dapo revealed that they had been instructed not to talk about the incident with anyone. Further attempts to know about happenings at the Okusanya’s home was also futile, as his employees would not divulge any information.
The two Okusanya passed on along with other notable names such as
Deji Falaye, while on their way to Akure, Ondo State for the burial of former governor of Ondo state Olusegun Agagu.
You will recall that Agagu slumped and died in Lagos on September 13, however despite the loss of many souls via the plane crash, the burial arrangement of the former Minister of Aviation continued with his burial holding at his Iju-Odo hometown on Thursday, October 4.
Other members of the MIC team who died in the plane crash include brothers Kingsley and Chijioke Duru.
Okusanya, is survived by his wives and children, including Bolanle, Ope, Ladi and Wura.
