It was celebration galore on Monday, September 11, when Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, celebrated his 83rd birthday. As expected, the grand party which took place at his home in Benin City, Edo State, attracted heavy weights both in the political and business spheres.

Present at the event to honour the Esama of Benin were notables such as former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel; Okulagba 1 of Warri, Ayiri Emami; ex-Governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion among several other dignitaries.

Full of life, the Esama of Benin was indeed the perfect host, as guests were entertained to their taste. Women dressed in traditional attires and monarchs with their staff of office were a common sight at the event which was indeed colourful.

Despite being 83, the Esama of Benin was as fit as a fiddle, as he took time out to celebrate his special day exchanging pleasantries with guests in attendance, amidst a sea of gaily dressed guests.

Recall that in 2014, the Esama of Benin celebrated his 80th birthday with a similar celebration.

Then, he celebrated the birthday for a period of one month with a tour that spanned across three continents.
The Esama also took delivery of a brand new Bentley Continental Sedan estimated to be worth N28 million, as his personal birthday gift.

Although the personal birthday gift which he will be receiving from himself for his 83rd birthday has not been unveiled yet, those close to him say it won’t be anything less than a stupendously expensive wonder on wheels. This is judging from antecedents.

Over the years, the Esama of Benin has established himself as a man of taste and his lifestyle has not change despite being 83 years old.

The Esama of Benin’s business empire includes an international property portfolio and a private TV and radio station. He owns a private bank, oil refinery, diamond, gold, marble mines over Africa, a private university (Igbinedion University, the first private university in Nigeria) and a large number of hotels. He previously owned the now-defunct private airline, Okada Air, of over 40 aircraft (planes and helicopters). He has built numerous churches including a Grand Catholic Cathedral, and has set up and owns a number of private hospitals across Nigeria.
