Babatunde Fowler was popular for his stewardship as the boss of Lagos Inland Revenue Service, (LIRS), in Lagos State.
While his appointment as the boss of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), came with a lot of criticism, the man still got the plum job.
However, his popularity is fast waning, as Fowler has come under serious criticism following his statement that in the near future, Nigerians applying for new passports at Immigration offices, will have to present their tax clearance papers before they would be issued with passport.
Fowler who last week disclosed this at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board which had the theme: “Increased Inter-Agency Co-operation to Enhance Tax Compliance and Optimise Revenue Collection’’ in Abuja immediately came under serious criticism for his statement, as his critics ask how individuals who are still struggling to survive could be placed under such stringent condition.
